As a commercial photographer I’m someone who tries to network on a regular basis at least once a week and I was fascinated by an invitation from a fellow member of the Newbury Business Group and founder of Berkshire PR and social media consultancy Nigel Morgan to go ‘netwalking’.
I’d spotted on Facebook that Graham Hill from Verbatim, The Phone Answering Company had been on such a ‘netwalk’ with Nigel and his dog and enjoyed himself, so I thought I should too!
I have to admit to slight reservations as a “cat man”, but Teg, an ebullient Border Collie with boundless energy turned out to be a great source of entertainment during our hour and a bit stroll around Hungerford Common and along the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath.
‘Netwalking’ turns out to be a brilliant business idea, taking the basic networking concept to the next stage and is surely the best way to have a one-to-one?
So many times after an event you have exchanged business cards and given and received ‘elevator pitches’, but rarely take it any further, except maybe the odd email follow up.
By meeting up away from office distractions and phone calls it provides the opportunity to learn more about our individual businesses and identify areas of possible synergy.
Exchanging tips on social media and photography as we walk; Nigel knows so much about Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and I have acquired a vast knowledge of things photographic during my professional career as a commercial photographer in Berkshire and the surrounds.
By just letting our thoughts run in this beautiful environment, we started looking for potential new strategies to help our businesses evolve.
Somehow, the open spaces and nature’s array of wildlife expands the mind, not unlike defragmenting your computer, creating new openings for new ideas.
My concern was how to justify the time, but as Nigel so succinctly put it “the dog needs walking”, so using that time in a constructive but unrestricted way leads to expanded knowledge and combines business and pleasure without the usual conflicts.
Netwalking a great way to learn more about your businesses and get that all important time to de-stress so do give me a shout if you would like to walk and talk and learn more about photography while telling me about your business – and of course if you want to know more about social media from Berkshire’s best, then contact Nigel Morgan and I’m sure he’ll extend an invite to join him and Teg.
